 This topic was discussed in the forum

https://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=125144#p125144

and it comes from a collection of 30 themes by John Worsdale, contained in the 'Celestial Philosophy' (Longman, 1828), with a large discussion [pp 35-37], the square theme appearing on p. 19.

Born October 1st, 1817, 4:45 P.M. in London.

In the forum cited above, we can read:

'On the day of Death, the Child went into the Street unobserved by any one, and immediately accompanied several other Children who were playing very near a Horse that was feeding a short distance from the Door, near the side of the River. The Horse was always considered to be a very quiet Animal, but in the fatal Hour, he kicked at the Children, yet none were injured, except the unfortunate Child, who received the stroke in its forehead, which proved instantly mortal; his Death happened on the 22nd of September, 1819, near three o’clock in the Afternoon, Age one Year, eleven Months, and twenty days.' [...]

 and i add this extract from Worsdale :

'The Astral causes that produced the sudden and violent Death of this Child, are plainly visible; the Ascendant is afflicted by the body of Saturn, and Square of the Moon, and Mars in Mundo; the Moon is conjoined with Mars among evil Stars in the Northern Angle, approaching the Terms of Saturn, without any relief, and that Luminary is applying- to the Mundane Square of Saturn, by direct motion. The Part of Fortune is afflicted by the opposition of the Moon and Mars; but I judged the work of Mortality to arise chiefly from the uninterrupted communication of those violent rays of Mars and the Moon from the Imum Celi, to the Sun, who is the true Apheta, or giver of Life, particularly because the Hyleg is near the Body of Mercury, and Rapt Parallel of Saturn ; and I shall here observe that Mercury is of the nature of the enemies in the Celestial constitution.'

Celestial philosophy, p. 36-37

 Now, I give the theme in a more modern form:

Aspects are computed from the mundane version of the theme; the blue triangle is the mark of the hyleg (SU) and the red triangle, that of the alchocoden (ME).
If we look at the possibilities for the hyleg, we find SU (which has an aspect with ME) and ME has a TERM-like dignity; moreover the theme is diurnal. MO does not have a Ptolemaic type aspect. ASC is the 2nd candidate to be the hyleg with an aspect of VE (and two dignities, TERM and EXN, I pass on FAC which is only mentioned for the record). However, ASC cannot be retained in principle because the moon is preventional (WANING type).
The fourth point to examine is POF since the theme is conjunctional. But there is no dignity.
The last point is the dominant of the theme: VE. VE is in opposition to ASC and SA. It is in dignity of TERM with SA.
If we want to make a synthesis, it is essential to respect the order of succession of the different possibilities offered: here there is no need to hesitate. The hyleg is SU and the alchocoden can only be ME, even if ME appears, as Worsdale clearly saw it as problematic.

ME is retrograde, peregrine and also occidental. SU is in fall [LIB].

The dominance table :

We see that VE and SA (score >= 5) are 'effective'.

The disposition of the stars (I am only talking about the group of Behenian stars here) shows:
- conjunction cusp of XII and Algol (β Per) in Regio domitude at 331.36
- conjunction of ASC and Deneb algedi (δ Cap) at 359.76 (Regio domitude)

The primary directions  :

1)- DIRECTION : □MA conj ASC
---------------------------------
For a direction between ASC and any planet or aspect (zodiacal or mundane),  we must compute ASC OA and m OA (here □MA) ; the inner circle contains the AR (right ascension) values of ASC and MA or SA.  The outer circle contains the values of the same elements in OA (oblique ascent). Natal ASC is always indicated with a round symbol (o) and the natal significator (MA or SA) with a cross (x). The direction is simulated  by a segment of a circle that ends counter-clockwise at the value in OA. A symbol reflects either a conjunction aspect or a quadrature aspect.

OA ASC = 348,55°
OA □ MA progr = 353,59

 D= 1,01°

1)- DIRECTION : CSA conj ASC
---------------------------------
For a direction between ASC and any planet or aspect (zodiacal or mundane),  we must compute ASC OA and m OA (here CSA) ; the inner circle contains the AR (right ascension) values of ASC and MA or SA.

OA C SA progr = 355,41

 D= 0,52°

It is notable that at birth we have respectively :

- for MA D = 2.55° and for SA D = 3.04°

2)- DIRECTION : VE conj MA

Problem XVI gives the means of finding if a star is in the same circle of position, with a planet or any significator. Find the arc position ET [3.21], which assumes the hour angle of the star and its semidiurnal arc. With ET and H [H' 4.29] you will have the angle O [5.36] of the position circle with the meridian; you will compare this circle to that of the signifier and you will see if it differs [adapted from Delambre, Histoire de l'Astronomie du Moyen Âge, p. 489, 1819]

Hugo Wolf

Hugo Wolf

was an Austrian composer of Slovene origin, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School in concision but diverging greatly in technique.
Though he had several bursts of extraordinary productivity, particularly in 1888 and 1889, depression frequently interrupted his creative periods, and his last composition was written in 1898, before he suffered a mental collapse caused by syphilis.

I. Natal chart

I.1 ALMUTEN

The theme is not well disposed; SU is XII (-5 ° of the cusp of XII) and in square with MA. We note that only VE is not peregrine. Among the beneficial aspects, MO TRI ME and MA TRI SA; the bad aspects are: SU square MA and ME square JU. Observe the aspect of mutual reception in MO - JU control as it intervenes in the choice of the alchocoden.

I.2 Hyleg

SU is not Hyleg considering that it is located at less than 5 ° of XII. Hyleg is MO, according to the 5-point research chart by Deborah Houlding [Notes on Dorotheus III: the haylāj, kadhkhudāh, and terms of life]. As can be seen, Dorotheus and Alcabisius give more precise instructions than Ptolemy. It is from point 3 that Ptolemy is less clear. However, the concept of dominant planet is interesting in that it allows to anticipate the search for alchocoden.There are two more points to mention: the lot of fortune and the preceding sygyzy. It should be known that the lot of fortune does not send aspect, and that sygyzy is calculated according to whether MO is waxing (preceding full moon or waning (preceding new moon). Unfortunately, the authors do not say whether one should consider the sygyzy point as likely to send aspects.
As we see, here, MO is HYLEG with 5 points.

I.3 Alchocoden

The search for alchocoden (kadhkhudāh) is based on the ruler of the hyleg; but it is not necessarily the ruler by sign; it can be - and more - the ruler by term. There is another point, fundamental according to all the authors: kadhkhudāh is a striking point which must exchange with the hyleg a so-called Ptolemaic aspect; it may be a banal aspect (so-called ray) but it can also be an aspect engaging the very structure of the chart. For example, in this case, hyleg and kadhkhudāh are linked by the reception link: MO is SAGI while JU is CAN. There is reciprocal reception. Rulers can also be considered by triplicity or decanate, etc. The goal is to reach a quotation that is the same, of course, for all cases.
So , in our case, ALCHOCODEN is JU. As we see, JU is in poor position, succedent (II) with a square to ME.

Al-Qabisi, IV:5, (74-78), p. 115, describes the kadhkhudah as "indicator of the length of life" and tells us: ... you look at the lord of the place of the haylag or its exaltation or its term or its triplicity or its decan, and whichever of them has most leadership in the degree of the haylag and is aspecting the haylag is first <choice> for the kadhudahship. If it does not aspect the haylag, it is one that is below it in leadership <and so on> until one looks at the one which is the least in leadership. If it does not aspect the haylag, the haylagship is incomplete for that haylag and you seek the haylagship from another. [cf. Deborah Houlding, 2014. 12/11/2014: www.skyscript.co.uk/dorotheus3notes.pdf]

Value of  kadhkhudāh :

Observe that one of the most delicate steps is to attribute a heavenly and earthly value to kadhkhudāh. We must consider whether kadhkhudāh is in the SA-MA trap (besieged : for instance see Joseph KENT), whether he is retrograde, dignified (debility) or strong (afflicted); if it is aspected (it is inevitably with the hyleg as I have just said either explicitly (ray) or implicitly (reception) Other points are still to be considered: if kadhkhudāh is in IX or XII, it is possible that it is located within 5 ° of the MC or the ASC, in which case it is considered as X or I. Even if it is located in the last degrees of VII: it is consider in VIII (these are well-known points) There may be another circumstance: SU is LEO or MO is CAN: then, in principle, SU or MO is both hyleg or kadhkhudāh. There are many other circumstances to consider which are of the order of 'monnayage' (in french), i.e. inversion, conversion (like in music).
In our case, observe the signs '-' which indicate that the state of kadhkhudāh is not so bad as that. It is 'succedent' which means that one is obliged to use the 'middle years' of the table of values, drawn up by the ancient astrologers.

Junctinus, Speculum astrologiae, 354, Lugduni, 1581

We give JU the value Y = 45, corresponding to the middle years. It is now necessary to look for the aspects which JU exchanges with the other salient points and which can modify - sometimes substantially - this initial value Y. There is a square between ME and JU (94.26 °) and a sextil between SYG (precedent full moon) and JU (61.29 °). The way to deal with the table of years values these aspects depends on the nature of the appearance; usually one proceeds by 1/12 of year and by lesser years. In the present case, we have :
- ME square JU = -20/12 = -1.67 and SYG (full MO) sex JU = 25/12 = 2.08.

So, Yt = 45 - 1.67 + 2.08 = 45.42.

It is very important to consider that we are not looking here for an utopian precision, but a probable order of presumption in the search for the number of years of life: this order of presumption constitutes the springboard for the targeting by the calculation of the primary directions.

Hugo Wolf is dead in 1903 at 43 years. He was diagnosed with syphilis, probably from 1880, and experienced periods of severe depression, particularly around 1886. He was interned shortly before his death.

II. Primary directions

The first two directions involve factors directly involved in the determination and value of the alcocoden. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to consider that there is a relation between the direction and the alchocoden. As usual, we must first consider the 'essential' directions, then the 'accidental' directions.

Felipe II

FELIPE II

[Philip II: Par William Thomas Walsh, Sheed & Ward, 1937, 1965]

[Philippe II, chap. IX, vol. 4, pp. 289-290, H. Forneron, 1882, Plon]

FIGURE I

[cf. I. Cloulas, Philippe II, p. 304, Paris, Fayard, 1992].

FIGURE II

[The L - Sat is displayed at the sunset and Sa has just passed the group {J, V}. Philip II is completely impotent since 1595 but retains power. It is interesting to compare several keys of time and age conversion on these two directional arcs:]

 TABLEAU I

  • le pas de Naibod a été adopté par Valentin Naibod (1527-1593) et correspond à une moyenne de 0°59'08" ;
  • celui de Ptolémée correspond à l'équivalence simple 1° (il paraît que cette mesure était utilisée par les auteurs anciens...) ;
  • celui de Cardan 0°59'12"" ;
  • le pas en long. [i.e. écliptique], variable et dans le cas présent de 0°57' ;
  • le pas en AR [pas de Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)]
  • enfin un pas X que je teste actuellement ;

[I tested the conversion steps (primary key) available in Morinus; I take this opportunity to remind you that:

     The step of Naibod was adopted by Valentin Naibod (1527-1593) and corresponds to an average of 0 ° 59'08 ";
     That of Ptolemy corresponds to the simple equivalence 1 ° (it seems that this measure was used by ancient authors ...);
     That of Cardan 0 ° 59'12 "";
     The long step. [ie. Ecliptic], variable and in the present case 0 ° 57 ';
     The step in AR [no Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)]
     Finally a step X that I am currently testing;

Note that I have not used in this case the option of the Moon's secondary motion (approximately 3 ° 20 'for about 5 hours since birth);
Let us now look at the direct directions:]

 FIGURE III

[We observe two directions in the "direct" sense: D M // S (1599); D J conj Sa (1601) is not counted since it already appears in DC (Figure II). Using the key conversion table, we have:]

  • 1559, traité du Cateau-Cambrésis : C M opp {V, J} (1559-1560}
  • 1580, roi de Portugal et des Algarves : D L // {J, V} (1579, 1580}

[Two keys give the best results: AR and X. Obviously, there is no question of envisaging any conclusion of these results, which are given here only as an illustration of our technique of work. Let us now examine some dates in the "social" life of Philip II with the step AR:

1540, Duke of Milan: C L // J (1540) - D S opp M (1540)

1554, King of Naples and Sicily: D Sa // M (1553)

1557, Saint-Quentin's victory: D M // Sa (1558) - C L // S (1558) -

1559, treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis: C M opp {V, J} (1559-1560)

1588, semi-disaster of the Invincible Armada (storm): D Sa conj L (1588)It is well understood that the substance of the points of reference can only be judged in a theme in relation to their accidental situation, as I have already remarked.
If we examine the case of Sa, which is in turn promising or significant, it is in connection with the decisive events such as those of 1554 or, especially of 1557.]

---------------------------------

Gout, the custom of a sedentary life, and probably also the remedies of doctors, had long exhausted Philip II. Before he had reached his seventy years, he could no longer stand or sit. His condition soon became known to the whole of Europe: his eyes turned to his son, the feeble Prince Philip: "I hope that God will give me the grace that, having served his Majesty well, I will make for ever The like to your Highness, "wrote the distant courtiers. On Tuesday June 30, 1598, the king lay on a litter and was transported to the Escurial. While remaining "on the shoulders", he continues to be communicated all the files. At the end of three weeks, the fever forces him to abandon work. Abscesses open to the right hand and right foot. Her doctor Mercado announces that the end seems close. One of the knees swells and cracks. The patient remained fifty-three days on the same bed, without stirring; It is neither changed nor washed; The sheets are impregnated with evacuations, sweats, suppurations. Vermin invades this poor body; The root of each hair is eaten away; The dressing draws two bowls of pus from the thigh; The flesh detaches itself to the kidneys and the shoulders. The skin is devoured by the parasites, the wounds by the gangrene. The king feels such disgust for himself that, by having his beer displayed, padded with white satin, he recommends placing the body first in a leaden coffin, so as not to soil the silk. "See, my son," said he; See where the greatness of this world ends; See what death is, and enjoy, for tomorrow you will reign. Philip II died on the 12th of September, his eyes fixed on the crucifix. [Philip II, chap. IX, vol. 4, p. 289-290, H. Forneron, 1882, Plon]
The theme is characterized by a strong Sa, located at DS; A conj. {J, V}; The MC is isolated. Death therefore occurs at the end of a very cruel illness in which chronic gout has its share and which must have become fatally complicated with sepsis and gangrene towards the end. It is not easy to isolate a hyleg insofar as certain striking points can be considered in a situation of either promise or of significance: thus Sa, which explains certain aspects of the character of Philip II:

Associated with a myth of succession, Saturn refers to the image of a king who never ceases to reign and whose death would have allowed royalty to incarnate in a younger king. The exceptional duration of the reign of Philip II. Nourished, at the end of his life, a whole series of writings and satirical remarks. Although they do testify to the dissatisfaction with its policy, they more fundamentally express the ancestral idea that, in order to better protect the ideal image of a royalty of divine essence, it was necessary to put an end to The exercise of the king before his physical degeneration or the birth of a conflict. One thinks of the description of Philip II made by the Venetian ambassador Nani who insists on the king's relentlessness to want to govern until his last breath without leaving room for his son. [Power in the mirror of literature in Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Augustin Redondo, p. 67, Presses de la Sorbonne, 2000]Some elements of the theme are contradictory: thus V is strong in principle (since in Taurus) but allied to J, rather weak (opposite Sagittarius). One could almost add, with Bertholet:

"Spain offers the combination of Venus and Saturn; Venus is cynical and Saturn is called Philip II "[the secrets of the Sar Pheadan Josephine]

I do not know, indeed, whether this author has studied the theme of Philip II., But it seems to me that the allusion is very well seen. It is also claimed that the king dressed in black towards the end of his life to attract the good graces of the planet Saturn! Anyway, see the primary directions in mundo in converse for the time of death: see above -
