'Maximilian had never been as sick as he was in the late fall of 1571, at least according to Monteagudo. The empress nursed her husband in her own chambers for more than two weeks, as he perspired and struggled to talk. By the following year, it was said that the emperor never felt well. Cardiac seizures recurred, as did excessive sweating and difficulty speaking. Maximilian also had urinary stones and gravel, gout, which forced him to walk with a staff, and gastrointestinal upheavals.
Though Maximilian’s zest to accomplish great things was long gone, no one could predict when he would succumb to one of his ailments. The emperor could, according to Philip II’s ambassador, look like a dead man one hour, but behave the next as if nothing had happened. Ambassador Michele reported that Maximilian preserved to the very end the regal bearing and amiable public demeanor that so many of his contemporaries had admired. His beard was still chestnut and his color good, a sign of basic vitality. His memory was excellent; he seemed always busy. As late as 1573, his physicians declared that if he avoided excesses, Maximilian would have a long and happy life.4 The emperor himself was less sure; indeed, he expected, and was ready for, the worst: “God Almighty, in whose hands all things rest, deals with me according to His Divine Will, wherefore I praise and thank Him for everything, since He knows best what [is] best or harmful to meI am forbearing, indeed, content with His Divine disposition, since it is unfortunately the way of the world that one has little pleasure and peace.' [Emperor Maximilian II, Paula S. Fichtner, p. 206, Yale university, 2001]
