Peter I Russia

Peter I Russia

Peter the Great 9 June [O.S. 30 May] 1672 – 8 February [O.S. 28 January] 1725) ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 7 May (O.S. 27 April) 1682 until his death in 1725, jointly ruling before 1696 with his elder half-brother, Ivan V.
Power was exercised by his mother, Natalya Naryshkina. It was only when Natalya died in 1694 that Peter, now age 22, became an independent sovereign. Formally, Ivan V remained a co-ruler with Peter, although he was ineffective. Peter became the sole ruler when Ivan died in 1696. Peter was 24 years old. [cf. wikipedia]
in 1718,Peter the Great’s hand-picked court condemned his son and onetime heir apparent Czarevitch Alexei to death for plotting treason. [see Alexi Czarevich].
In early January 1725, Peter was struck with uremia. He died between four and five in the morning 8 February 1725. An autopsy revealed his bladder to be infected with gangrene.
