DIDEROT
Denis Diderot (5 October 1713 – 31 July 1784) was a French philosopher, art critic, and writer. He was a prominent figure during the Enlightenment and is best known for serving as co-founder, chief editor, and contributor to the Encyclopédie along with Jean le Rond d'Alembert.
Diderot's literary reputation during his lifetime rested primarily on his plays and his contributions to the Encyclopédie; many of his most important works, including Jacques the Fatalist, Rameau's Nephew, Paradox of the Actor, and D'Alembert's Dream, were published only after his death.

Diderot, who had been under police surveillance since 1747, was swiftly identified as the author, had his manuscripts confiscated, and was imprisoned for some months, under a lettre de cachet, on the outskirts of Paris, in the dungeons at Vincennes where he was visited almost daily by Rousseau, at the time his closest and most assiduous ally.

III exitus 1784 : Sudden death from myocardial infarction
Jean Starobinski, in his Diderot, un Diable de ramage (Gallimard, 2012) writes :
'In Volume II of the Germanic Medico-Surgical Library of Brewer and Delaroche-, we discover some lines that report a conversation with Diderot. To my knowledge, Diderot's biographers have never mentioned it. The document, to be honest, is pretty thin, but must join the biographical file. There is talk of angina pectoris, so named for the first time in 1768 by the English physician Heberden, who had given a systematic description. Diderot had experienced the symptoms of this affection as soon as he traveled to Russia. The "frightful chest-ache" of the beginning of 1774, attributed to the cold, may have been an intense attack of angina, if not even an infarction. The memoirs of Madame de Vandeul confirm: "Such a long time in the car, and perhaps the germ of the disease which separated us from it, had given him a tightness of chest as soon as he walked for a long time. The physical decline of Diderot is accompanied by all the signs of heart failure. The final "Note" of the volume of Jacques-André Naigeon's Memoirs states that the sudden death of Diderot was predicted by "his doctors-". The testimony of Daniel Delaroche is brief and precise. It interests us because it evokes the attitude of Diderot before the prognosis which was to be verified.' [appendice : note sur l'angine de poitrine et la mort subite].
