James Wilson, a complete dictionary of astrology, 1819, natal chart of Charlotte Augusta plate 1 (9h24 am)
This theme is an opportunity to highlight the difference that can be observed between radix aspects reputed to be favorable, on a zodiacal figure, and their counterpart in a mundane figure. This particularly illustrates the words of Ptolemy and other authors, who mention the trine whose base is located in a sign of short ascension and the sextil whose base is located in a sign of long ascension. In a mundane position, such aspects may actually constitute squares. Here we have the illustration. We can moreover make the opposite remark: a square is not always unfavourable: in a mundane position, it can be equivalent by structure to a sextil (sign of short ascent) or a trine (sign of long ascent). These remarks, made long before the use of mundane figures (by Placidus in particular) are in favour of the exclusive use of mundane themes. I am personally dubious about the opinion of practitioners who consider that Ptolemy's statements are only accurate (as far as they are true) in mundane charts and not in zodiacal charts; indeed, it appears to me that the charts in the zodiac are only an approximation (sometimes rough) of the real astronomical conditions.
Ptolemy says :
"And sometimes, also, among the signs that ascend slowly the sextile aspect destroys, when it is afflicted, and again among the signs that ascend rapidly, the trine..."
Dorotheus appears to be referring to this tradition when he discusses straight and crooked signs. [see here : https://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1742].
Recall :
signs of short ascension (<= 2 hours) : from Capricorn to Gemini ; signs of long ascension (> 2 hours) : from Cancer to Sagittarius in Ptolemy's zodiac.
Crooked signs : the Sun transverses some astrological signs more quickly than others. This is what William Lilly referred to as “straight signs” (long ascension) versus “crooked signs” (court ascension).

Natal (zodiacal)
See the SA-VE (and SA-JU) trine. The base of the trine is in ♒, a sign of short ascent. This is the first important element. The second element is to establish the transitional relationship with the 'same' aspect in mundane position, depending on the DOMIFICATION choice (here REGIOMONTANUS).
Natal (mundane)
A prori there is a disturbing element in the reasoning that one is tempted to emit insofar as we are in full contradiction. This contradiction is only apparent and it disappears if we really want to understand that the zodiacal figure of the nativity chart is only an illusion; the true astral figure is represented by the mundane chart. This is why it is very important to work with both kinds of figure at the same time. If we represent the mutation of the trine into a square, we obtain the following table:

the upper part of the table shows the different radix aspects considered under their arrangement in east or west with respect to the 'base' planet (here for the trine SA-VE, we therefore indicate OR △). the middle part shows the mutation in mundane position with regard to the orb: it is the third element which is to be considered in the transcription of the zodiacal radix aspect into mundane form; thus we see that according to the orb taken, a trine will not automatically be considered as a square; if the orb is tight there simply won't be a square form (in our calculations we take ±2° but in the diagrams and in finding the hyleg and alchocoden we take ± 5°). Finally, the lower part of the diagram shows the mundane aspects; in the present case, the trine is undeniably represented by a square and it is therefore in this sense that it must be interpreted.
Another example: let's see the square aspect radix MA-VE; it is in an intermediate situation between sextil and trine; and above all the basis of this aspect is in sign of long ascension (♏). The mundane transcription does not find any correspondence (the mundane distance in REGIOMONTANUS domitude is 131.23° for MA-VE ; it is 143° in CAMPANUS and 126.5° in PLACIDUS).

The table above shows, according to the rise time of the signs by SU, the aspect to be analysed and possibly transcribed in mundane form. In this case, we have an Occ ◻ (MA-VE) with no mundane match.

Lilly ALM : JU | dyH : dynamic house, The principle of dynamic astrological houses is the same as for the zodiac. I remind you that a planet located in the last five degrees of a sign is considered to be part of the next sign (provided it is not retrograde). For houses, it is the opposite which, logically, must be understood: a planet located in the first five degrees of a house is considered in the previous house (even if it is retrograde): Indeed, it is necessary consider the "flow" of the primum mobile that seems to move the whole sky. |
