Wallenstein, Albrecht von

Wallenstein, Albrecht von

(24 September 1583 – 25 February 1634), also von Waldstein, was a Bohemian military leader and an Imperial Count Palatine, who offered his services and an army of 30,000 to 100,000 men to Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor during the Thirty Years' War (1618–48). He became the supreme commander of the armies of the Habsburg Monarchy and was a major figure of the Thirty Years' War.

Morin de Villefranche, Astrologia gallica, XVII, sect. II, cap. 2, p. 402

After his arrival at Cheb, certain senior Scottish and Irish officers in his force assassinated him on the night of February 25. To carry out the assassination, a regiment of dragoons under the command of an Irish colonel, Walter Butler and the Scots colonels Walter Leslie and John Gordon first fell upon Wallenstein's trusted officers Adam Trczka, Vilém Kinsky, Christian Illov and Henry Neumann while the latter attended a feast at Cheb Castle (which had come under the command of Gordon himself), and massacred them. Trczka alone managed to fight his way out into the courtyard, only to be shot down by a group of musketeers. A few hours later, an Irish captain, Walter Devereux, together with a few companions, broke into the burgomaster's house at the main square where Wallenstein had his lodgings (again courtesy of Gordon), and kicked open the bedroom door. Devereux then ran his halberd through the unarmed Wallenstein, who, roused from sleep, is said to have asked in vain for quarter [wikipedia]

I. Natal chart

I opted for the birth time given in Astrodients; that of Morin is 16:50.
We see once more time  a square between MO and SU. Mo is opposite to ME, JU. Ruler of ASC is SA, ruler of MC is JU. ALMUTEN is SA.

SU is debilitated (LIB) and MO exile(CAP). According to Lilly, ALMUTEN is MA. VE (SCO) and MA (LIB) are also debilitated.

So, we must consider the directions of MO and SU, relatively at SA and MA.

II. Primary directions

A. SA conj MO

1. parameters

Observe the SA longitude ; originally it is 349.024° PIS ; if we take the Duval's method of finding latitude, we have first to compute the Campanus domitude of SA with latitude (- 2.423°).

-dom SA cum latitudine = 10.864°.

Then, we find the new longitude without latitude :

- L (SA) = 356.79° PIS.

and from now on, all aspects of SA will have to be searched for with this modified longitude (and without latitude).
Observe that we SA (with new longitude) possess a 'confined' latitude. MO is without latitude (in zodiaco) as it is significator (recall : by 'custom', significator in zodiaco has not latitude... ). The mean node of SA is computed for other works (☊ = 79°).

1. parameters

It should be noted that the planetary nodes which are calculated are only the reflection of the maximum inclination i, in the sense of Morin de Villefranche. in no case are these 'real' geocentric nodes. For instance, the graphic hereunder is an example of determination of maximum latitude for MA.

Henri II de Montmorency

Henri II de MONTMORENCY

(30 April 1595 – 30 October 1632)

was a French nobleman and military commander. He was beheaded in Toulouse's town hall 30 October 1632, by a guillotine-like device (according to the memoirs of Jacques, vicomte de Puysegur )

His horoscope is analyzed by Morin de Villefranche in Astrologia gallica (liber XVII, 401). Cf. also traduction by James Holden, p. 62 sq.

I. Natal chart

As said by Morin :

'Indeed, [...] Jupiter and Venus, rulers of the ASC and MC, were conjunct, and these planets were signifying men who were famous, strong, warlike, high-born, generous, liberal, and fortunate in their actions, which they were down to the time of their violent death; but for both of them, both Lights were rulers of the 8th, and Saturn was afflicted in the 8th, which signified for both of them a violent death and a public one on account of the Lights. [...] Venus, the ruler of the MC and the Sun, posited in her own exaltation and conjoined to Jupiter, ruler of the ASC and Mars in Pisces, is the very evident cause of the above said good fortune.' [Astrologia gallica, liber XVII, pp. 61 sq, trad. J.Holden]

But, there are boots in this figure... Because, we see a mundane square between MA and SU and a week opposition between MO and SA. SA is debilitated (LEO).
The ALMUTEN is VE (or JU according to Lilly).

For the primary directions, we must consider the rays from VE.

II. Primary directions

A. VE conj □MA

Observe that SU is doubly debilitated by celestial configuration and accidental disposition, being in square with MA radix. We know that SU is not 'good' by itself and that it 'reflects' the nature of the planetary rays.

1. parameters

You will see below the summary table indicating the date when the maximum latitude of MA (PM) is reached (JUN 1 1595) to determine i inclination ( i = 2.08). From i, we compute the longitude of the ascending node (☊ = 23.31 ARI) and then the distance of the node to the ray. Here, it is the square of MA ( mundane 90 °) which is worth in zodiacal basis 68.35 °. The latitude is l (□) = + 0.58 °.

This table summarizes what Morin de Villefranche gives in his latitudes Tabula correctiones (Astrologia gallica, XXII, section 2, pp. 550-551).

2. analysis

3. result

D --> Z D Regio-Campa -0.01.

B. MO opp MC

It is a converse direction.

1. parameters

2. analysis

3. result

D --> M C Regio-Campa -0.29.

C. MA opp MC

This direction -perhaps the very one - is to put in relation with the previous square of the group JU-VE to MA and the opposition of MO to MC. Indeed, one obtains a true interlacing reflecting the aspects radix, in particular the mundane square MA-SU and the zodiacal square of SU to MO.

D =

Conclusion

Morin de Villefranche compares in volume 17 of the Astrologia gallica the natal chart of Gustav Adolph, king of Sweden, and the duke of Montmorency. There is indeed a similar direction: that of MA to the MC axis. (MA conj MC for Gustav-Adolp ans MA opp MC in the case of Montmorency...)

Copernicus Nicolaus

Copernicus Nicolaus

Nicolaus Copernicus : (19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the universe, likely independently of Aristarchus of Samos, who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier.

Toward the close of 1542, Copernicus was seized with apoplexy and paralysis, and he died at age 70 on 24 May 1543.

The horoscope, reproduced in Biskup (1973), plate 22, is from Cod. lat. Monac. 27003, a collection of horoscopes of famous people, dated, apparently, to the 1540’s. There is another horoscope for Copernicus in Cod. lat. Monac. 10667 containing the birth date 10 Feb. 1473, 4;38h after noon. Cf. Birkenmajer (1900), 406-12. Most of the positions in the two horoscopes are the same, and the correct date of the horoscope, given by the faster bodies, is definitely 19 Feb. [Swerdlow N.M., Neugebauer, Mathematical Astronomy in Copernicus's De revolutionibus, part 2, p. 454, Springer-Verlag, New-York 1984]

I. Natal chart

ASC VIR, ruler ME (debilitated, PIS). MC TAU, ruler VE. According to Omar and Ibn-Ezra, VE is ALMUTEN (bu VE VIII). According to Lilly, JU is ALMUTEN.

II. Primary directions

A. SA conj ME

This direction is important because of the square radix SA-ME; also because ME being ruler of ASC, is probably hyleg.

B. □MA conj ME

1. parameters
The latitude of the square of Mars is obtained by determining the apparent node of MA, according to the method of Morin de Villefranche [cf. Astrologia Gallica, book XXII, sect. II]

'Moreover, in Book 16, Section I, Chapters 6-8, we have reported the opinions of Ptolemy, Cardan, Bianchini. Schöner, Regiomontanus, Origanus, and Algol about the celestial circle in which the aspects of the planets having latitude must be conceived; then, about their correction when they arc referred to the ecliptic; and we rejected those opinions, and set forth our own in Chapter 9. declaring that the aspects of any planet are conceived to be in that great circle, which from its appearance in the caelum deviates least from the path of the planet, and which we have called the circle of aspects;'' and we have demonstrated the method geometrically, by means of which these aspects may be referred by longitude to the ecliptic with their own latitude.' [Astrologia gallica, XXII, trans. J. Holden]

According to Max Duval, Morin's method consists, in the period of days surrounding the birth, of following on the ephemerids, the evolution of the latitude of the planet whose latitude we want to determine an aspect (radix or directional). The MAX of the latitude must be determined and used as the inclination i of this planet (regardless of its orbital inclination). For instance, taking MA as PM, we have :

L MA = 321.71° AQU. lat (MA) = -1.11° on Copernicus's birth day. Search now the Max lat : we find in ephemeris : -1.13° the May 1 1473. (but we take +1.13° because inclination is always taken as positive).
At this time, we compute the nodal distance of actual latitude with :

Dn = Asin ( tan(-1.11) x tan(|max lat|) ) = 279.94° (with |max lat| = 1.13° )

Then, we find the longitude of the node,

L Dn = M(MA) - Dn (or Dn-180°) = 221.77° SCO

We must know if Dn is increasing or decreasing, and being in the quadrants 0°-90° (90°-180°) or opposite sides (resp. Dn or Dn-180))

Then, we compute the Dn' ray : for instance □MA (90°) from L(MA) = 321.71°

Dn' □MA = L(MA = PM) 321.71° + (ray) 90° - (Dn' ray) 221.77° = 189.94°

So, l□MA = atan( tan(|max lat|) x sin (Dn' □MA) ) = -0.19°.

You must read too the translator's comment of J. H. Holden in Astrologia gallica, book XVI, pp. 55-57 which explains the thoughts of Morin de Villefranche.

But we must take into account that the □MA is not zodiacal but mundane: it means that □MA is not equal to 90 ° in zodiaco; it is equal to 83.28 ° in zodiaco and therefore, the Dn 'ray = 183.22 °. So,  l□MA = -0.06 °.

Conclusion

We must therefore beware that it is not so obvious that it passes from a basis (in zodiaco) to an other basis (in mundo). If one wants to respect the astronomical 'reality', it is nevertheless what one has to do.
